Online vs Land Based Casinos Part II

Online casinos and land-based UK casinos both offer the gambler a place to play whatever game it is that he wants to play. Even though they provide different atmospheres and environments, the bottom line is they both offer the player the opportunity and the environment in which to play. This article will concentrate on the different games and how playing the game online and in a land based casino differ.  The rules and the game aren’t always played in the same way with online casinos as they are in offline or land based casinos. Some of these little differences can change the advantage or odds for or against the player.  The house will always have the advantage in that the house will make money whether you are playing online or at a land based casino.  When playing in either environment, the UK bingo player always wants to familiarize himself with the house rules.  They vary from establishment to establishment.

Baccarat is a good example.  When playing baccarat at a land based casino, the table has three positions, one for the banker and one for two player hands.  The gamblers then can place bets on the players or the banker.  If you play baccarat online, you will find that there is only one player hand. Most of the online baccarat games are the mini-table version. As with other games involving cards, pay attention to the number of decks in play.  The gambler’s chances of winning decrease as the number of decks in play increases so you want to find the place with the fewest number of decks, just as in a land based game.  Pay attention to the commissions rate also when playing online.  The house takes its cut in online gambling games just as it does in land based casino games. This is also true in blackjack games.  The number of decks of cards is a factor as in all games involving cards.

If you play backgammon, you will notice that some online establishments place a time limit on the game and on the players’ turns.  The time limit can place the players under more pressure in a game. It means they can’t sit and think about the game situation and think out a strategy.  There are some good points about time limits.  The player has to have pre-developed strategies for different situations worked out in advance since he can’t sit there and think them out.  This speeds up the game. Be sure you know the house rules before you enter a game, especially if it is a game involving money.  Violating the rules can cost money.

The biggest difference in online games and playing in a land based casino is the atmosphere, or more appropriately stated, the distractions.  What is missing in online games is the noise and the distractions.  There are all kinds of things to distract the player’s attention from the game in a land based casino.  Mirrors are strategically placed to distract players in some cases.  The casino staff can distract the player.  In Craps, one of the functions of the stickperson is to encourage bets usually in places where the house has the advantage. Gamblers around the table caught up in the “heat of battle” are susceptible to this kind of encouragement.  They find themselves placing bets that they would normally not place and they find themselves losing money that they would not have lost. There is also the distraction of the waitress asking if you want a complementary drink.  This is also an interruption that breaks the player’s concentration on the game, no matter what game the player is playing.  A break in concentration can means the difference between winning and losing.  A player who is “counting” cards in blackjack has the cocktail waitress walk up and asks if he wants a complementary drink.  The player looks up and answers.  Now he has lost track of the cards like most player’s do in this situation.  Does this affect his play?  The alcohol is also a factor.  Alcohol dulls the senses and the ability to think.  Players make bets they normally wouldn’t make.  They lose more money when they are under the influence of alcohol.  Distractions are a big part of the land based casino experience and all of these distractions are absent when playing online.  Online gambling allows the player to concentrate on the game better.  There is no cocktail waitress tapping him on the shoulder asking if he wants a complementary drink.  He has to provide his own alcohol if he wants alcohol.

Because of the lack of distractions, it might be that the quality of play is better online than in land based casinos.  If that is true, then the games are more challenging to the player who has a better chance to develop his playing skills. The lack of alcohol means he has a clearer head.  The existence of chat rooms and forums means he can ask questions and obtain the advice of people from all over the world. The online casino provides the environment where the game itself is the focal point. This changes the advantage for the player.  The player may win more online than in a land based casino simply due to the quieter environment. This is an advantage that should not be overlooked or ignored because it translates into money.

This discussion regarding land based versus online casinos will go on for years.  Each has its advantages and disadvantages.  For the player who is trying to learn the game, the online casino provides a quiet environment but it is more difficult to ask questions.  He can’t just look up and ask a casino staff member as he can in a land based casino.  He has to find a forum or chat room, and describe the situation and then ask.  The online casinos provide a good environment for those trying to perfect their game and develop their strategy.  They also expose a lot of people to games they would not normally be exposed to.
